Make a diwali lantern at home

Materials You'll Need:

  • Colored or decorative paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Glue or tape
  • String or thread
  • Tea light or battery-operated LED candle (for safety)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Materials: Gather all the materials you need on a clean and spacious work surface.

  2. Cut the Paper: Take the colored or decorative paper of your choice and cut it into a square. The size of the square will determine the size of your lantern. A 6x6 inch square is a good starting point.

  3. Fold the Square: Fold the square of paper in half diagonally to form a triangle.

  4. Draw the Design: On the folded side of the triangle, draw your lantern design. This can be as simple as drawing lines, curves, or any patterns you like. Keep in mind that these designs will be cut out, so choose something that looks appealing when illuminated.

  5. Cut Out the Design: Carefully cut along the lines you've drawn, ensuring that you don't cut along the folded edge. When you're finished cutting, unfold the paper to reveal the lantern's design.

  6. Form the Lantern Shape: Roll the paper into a cylinder, making sure the cutout design is on the outside. Overlap the edges slightly and secure them in place with glue or tape.

  7. Add a Handle: Attach a string or thread to the top of your lantern to create a handle. Make sure it's securely fastened, so you can hang the lantern.

  8. Insert the Light: Place a tea light or a battery-operated LED candle inside the lantern. If you're using a real candle, exercise caution and ensure the flame doesn't come into contact with the paper. LED candles are safer and work well for this purpose.

  9. Light Your Lantern: Hang your lantern or place it on a stable surface, and then light the candle inside. The cutout design will cast beautiful patterns on the surrounding area, creating a warm and festive ambiance.

Please remember to prioritize safety when using real candles and never leave them unattended. LED candles are a safer option, especially if you have children or pets in the house. Enjoy the warm glow of your homemade Diwali lantern and the festive spirit it brings to your home.
